A group of genes that are found next to each
other on a chromosome, and are turned on and
off as an integrated unit. They usually
produce enzymes that control different steps
in the same biochemical pathway. Operons were
discovered 1961 (by the French biochemists F
Jacob and J Monod) in bacteria; they are less
common in higher organisms where the control
of metabolism is a more complex process.
